About
Youth Democracy Institute (YDI) is a nonpartisan nonprofit helping young people build the knowledge, confidence, and skills to shape their communities and participate in democracy. Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, we make civic learning hands-on, relevant, and accessible.
Through our programs, young people explore issues they care about, learn how government works, and put their ideas into action. They practice working together, engaging decision-makers, and leading projects that respond to community needs.
We partner with schools, community organizations, and faith-based institutions to create ongoing opportunities for young people to grow—from first-time participants to leaders, facilitators, and mentors. Our programs connect classroom learning with real-world experience and support Virginia’s education standards.
We believe every young person deserves opportunities to be heard, contribute, and lead. By making those opportunities part of young people’s lives, YDI is building a stronger foundation for democratic participation across generations.
