About the Event
This workshop is designed for middle school students in grades 6–8 and aligns with Youth Democracy Institute’s NextGen Leadership Academy age cohort.
Overview
Held during MLK weekend, this interactive workshop introduces students to the idea that leadership begins with values, courage, and action—not titles or age. Students explore how young people have shaped history and how they can begin to see themselves as leaders in their own schools and communities.
What Students Will Experience
Connect with peers and build confidence through a fun, welcoming group activity
Explore youth-led civil rights history through short videos and guided discussion
Practice teamwork, communication, and public speaking in supportive activities
Apply leadership skills to real issues that matter to them
End with a reflection and take-home message about their own leadership potential community.
Part of the Leadership & Legacy Series
This workshop is part of Youth Democracy Institute’s Leadership & Legacy Series. Students who register for this workshop will also receive complimentary admission to our February community event on youth civic courage — more details coming soon.
Want to support access? Families and community members may choose to Sponsor a Student so more young people can participate in Youth Democracy Institute programs.
